O’Donnell Park getting bigger for Donegal
Works are ongoing at the O’Donnell Park to increase the capacity for Donegal’s Ulster Senior Football Championship quarter-final against Down on the 26th of April. The current capacity is around 9,000 and more space is now being created by terracing behind the clubhouse end goals. It is hoped that altogether that the attendance at the Letterkenny venue could be around 10,000. Despite hopes in some quarters that the game might be staged elsewhere the St. Eunan’s Club were informed early last month that the match against Down would take place at the O’Donnell Park. It’s 75 years since the last Ulster Championship match was held there. And the venue will also be in the frame for one of the All-Ireland series group games as well. In early January the Ulster Council had named the O’Donnell Park as the venue with MacCumhaill Park unavailable due to redevelopment works. However, despite that Ulster Council’s decision it wasn’t necessarily taken as a given by some folk hoping that the MacCumhaill Park project could be fast tracked while there was some support for Fr. Tierney Park in Ballyshannon as the venue. If Donegal win against Down, the semi-final they will go on to play the winners of Fermanagh/Armagh/Tyrone on Sunday, May 3rd.
